Commercial Fish Processing is the primary industry on Kodiak Island.

You would be amazed at how professionally all fish including Sport Caught Fish is processed in Kodiak. While fishing on the charter boat Reel Fun each fish caught was immediately packed in ice. At the end of the day the boat pulled up to a fish processing dock where the entire box of iced fish was lifted off the boat with a crane. The fish was immediately taken into a clean and refrigerated fish processing facility. There it was filleted, vacuumed packed and flash frozen. Our daily catch was tagged, computer tracked and stored in freezers until the day we headed home. Processing costs around $1.00/lb..

The primary sport fish processor on Kodiak Island is Island Seafood's. Their friendly and competent staff did an excellent job processing our daily catch. They were especially helpful in properly packing all our frozen fish in heavy duty thermal shipping boxes for our flight home. Island Seafood's also sells and ships all types of fresh frozen seafood and can deliver it overnight directly to your door.

I learned the least expensive way to bring home hundreds of pounds of frozen filets is to have it packed in 50lb boxes and check it on the airline as additional luggage. Alaska Air and ERA Aviation charge $80.00 for each 50lb box and they check it all the way through to your destination. That works out to $1.60/lb.. FedEx charges $3.00/lb for next day service.
